THE YOUNG MEN'S BUILDING.

OVER £10,600 RAISED FOR ITS ■ERECTION. A WONDERFUL RESULT. Last night tho period, expired within which the campaign was to be conducted for the collection of tho £10,000 required'for, the erection of a building for thu Young Men's Christian Association's work upon the site in Willis-etreefc given by 'Mrs. Williams. At 10 o'clock in tho evening, a volley of cheers was heard upon Lainblon-quay, and curious citizens who' happened to be abroad at that hour learned that the sum required had been subscribed. As a matter of fret, so rapidly and liberally did donations cometo hand yesterday fyiat the £10;000 was passed. The taking's 'for yesterday alono reached £700, and « donations continued to come m this morning, the total amount subscribed at noon to-day being £10,600. Within the past eight months the association has received gifts (including value of sito and building fund) amounting to the equivalent of clos© upon £16,000. This constitutes an, Australian record in tho way of a subscription fund. A striking feature of the collecting work was the success of the association's ten teams of ten members each. Tho^e young men, who are all members of thu association, set out with the endeavour to raise £I^soo, one-quarter of tho whole sum required, and each team had a determination to raise_ at least £100. Thsy 'were successful in both aims, no team receiving less than £100, and tlio total amount collected by the ten teams was £2350, £200 being 'received yestcrdav. , It has to be remenibsred that many of the subscriptions are in the nature of pledged promises. It is probabb that the Jbuildine: will cost more than £10.000, and when finished another £2000 will bo required to furnish and equip it. Theassociation therefore hopes that the inflow of donations will otill continue. There were muny generous callers at the office on Lnmbton-quay last night, and telephone messages intimating that there wr,s money behind the message were received up till 11 p.m. The plans for ths new building are already "in hand, and will be pushed towards completion with energy. The building is to be erected ub soon as possible. '

It is the intention of tho membera of the Consfuble-street Congregational Church to erect in the immediate future a church building that will be more suited to the needs of Newtown than the fcchoohoom. in which services have been held in the past. Already it fairly substantial sum has been promised towards the cost of tho building, but moTo is required, and the members o/ the sister churckes of the Terrace and Courtenaypluce have combined to assist the Newtown community in making the fair a success.
