A public meeting of citizens, convened by the "Mayor, was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening to consider yvhat steps should be taken to recognise the services of Sergeant 'O'Malley, whose retirement irom the I force on pension takes place on the 10th I inst. The presentation is to tako the form of an illumiiiuted address and a purse of sovereigns. - A representative committee was appointed, with Mr. B. J. -Dolan as secretary and treasurer. A large sum was subscribed in the room. The Justices of the Peace in the district are making a separate presentation to the sergeant. - • • A visit was paid to Masterton yesterday by the Hon. Hall-Jones and the Under-Secretary of the Mines Department relative to the proposal to establish a State coal depot to be under the supervision of the Borough Council. Ihe Mayor and Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., met the visitors and showed them some sites adjacent to the railway station. A site at present occupied" by "cattle-yards in the railway'station was regarded as the most suitable, and enquiries are to be made from the Railway Department as to the prospect of securing it for tho purpose required. At the. quarterly meeting of the Masterton Licensing Committee, held yesterday, it was ordered that I'rince of Wales and Empire Hotels (Masterton), as well as hotels at Te Niii and Whaßatllki, should be rebuilt, plans to be submitted at the next quarterly meeting of tho committee. Application for renewal of one license was adjourned for three months, the conduct or the hotel to be observed in the meantime. Improvements at several hotels were ordered, and in three - suspected cases licensees were cautioned. The committee granted 11 o'clock closing to hotels in Masterton and Eketahuna townships, and 10 o'clock to others. In regard to conditional licenses it was decided to increase the fee from £2 to £3 per day. Licensees were also Cautioned about the practice of "loaning" a license to an unauthorised person in connection with permits at sports and other gatherings, two recent instances of this kind having been reported to the committee. ' ' GREYTOWN, This Day.. An agricultural class in conjunction with tho local- school wa3 opened last night for adults. Mr. Davis, the board's instructor, and Professor Kirk gave addresses and illustrations. The Mayor, Mr. YV. Udy, members of tho Borough Council and School Committee, and othem interested were present.
