Rhind, the advance representative for the White Cross League, is endeavouring to get large numbers of young men to attend Mr. R. H. Bligh's VVhite Cross lecture on "The Perils of Impurity," as he imparts advice which should be of great value to those approaching manhood. Many a young man, he points out, has been ruined by medical quacks, who for the sake of the money to be obtained, trade on his imag-' mary fears regarding healthful development. At) the Woodville Poultry Show, Mr. W. E. Laney, , of Petone, scored two fiist, three seconds, two thirds, and special for Plymouth Rocks. Mr. S. P. Brown, of Petone, secured two first, two seconds, and one third for Andalusians. At lbs last meeting of the Ktipicr Borough Council a letter was read from Mr. Hogg, M.H.R., with regard to ti price of fish, and he recommended the council to adopt a similar system of inspection and sale to that in force in Hobart. Mr. Hogg explains that at Hobart all fish intended for sale had to pass through the hands of an inspector and salesman appointed by the City Council. The building in which that work was done was situated near tho wharves, and provided with, two huge tables covered with heavy slate slabs. On these tobies the fish were spread every morning and inspected, and those- considered unfit for food were set aside for destruction. Tho inspector then offered the fish in lots by auction. The owners of the fish paid a small toll, which was levied on the spot, but the general public had every opportunity of getting libh at first cost. ■ A mock breach of promise case was tried by jury at St. Peter's Club last evening. There was a large gathering of members and visitors present. The parties were Miss Sprawlings (Mr. A. G. Williams), who claimed £560 from Mr. Dumaresq (Mr. S. F. M'Lean). The Rev. 'G. P. Davys acted as Judge, Messrs. Bartlett and Low counsel for plaintiff, and Rev. S. J. Handover and H. Martin for defendant. The jury returned , a verdict for plaintiff with one i farthing damages. Corroboration of the statements mado a few days ago by the Chief Inspector of 'Stock on the East Coast relative to the alarming increase of rabbits in many parts of Hawkes Bay is given by a resident of Wellington, who has just come down from the affecOcd district. SpeaJiing to a- Post reporter this morning he stated that Mr. Miller had in no way exaggerafled the position. The rabbits are, he says, unusually numerous in some parts of Hawkes Bay^, and unless drastic measures are speedily adopted the monetary loss to the country will be'enormous. Crown lands appear to be in. a worse condition than properties which are privately owned. Ho has no hesitation in saying that the work of suppressing rabbits has been carried on in some districts in a very perfunctory manner. In soma parlte of Hawkes Bay which he has visited the rabbits will not touch the poison laid for them, and he has seen with his own eyss numbers of others eating the mixture witfhout fatal results. His idea is that the best method of exterminating the pest is to employ traps and dogs. He points out that rabbits in tihe Rimu- I taka district have been almost exterminated through the incessant vigilance of the Stock Department, and he fails to see why equal success cannot be achieved in the Hawkes Bay district!. The Petone Borough Council's reply to the Hutt Council's acceptance of the offer to supply gas at 5s 3d per 1000 feet for three years was received by the Hutt body on Wednesday night. The conditions setf forth have already been published. The Mayor 6aid he had interviewed Mr. Birch, Gas Engineer, as to the proposed pressure and quality of light that Petone offered to supply, andi in Mi-. Birch's opinion tlhe candle power was adequate but the meter gauge pressure should ba greater. There were several minor matters whioh it had been arranged Mr. Birch and the Petono Borough Engineer (Mr. Cook) would go into the following duy and the adjustment of the details as arrived at by those two gentlemen would no doubt be accepted by" the two councils. He was sure from what he had been able to gather that the Hutt would get satisfaction now, ahd there were no difficulties in the way. "Wo will get all ire have asked for and pTobably a lititle more," he added. An employee of the Wellington Gas Company recommended by Mr. Birch was appointed gasfltter, etc., for three months.
