WELL-MERITED SUCCESS.

The Young Men's Christian Association is to bo congratulated on the success which has attended its " campaign. ' The required sum of £10,000 has' been exceeded, and the erection of their building, which from the first it was determined should be opened fr-ee of debt, can bo at once undertaken. The movement has brought into prominence the onergy, devotion, and business ability of tho promoters, and it has manifested the generosity which tlw people of this city — not forgetting certain outsiders as- well — display in support of a movement appealing to their higher sympathies. Among those specially worthy of honour is tho lady whose niunificenc© provided the admirable site, and whose example did so much to awaken interest and stimulate others to active assistance. The rich have given of their wealth, and those of moderate means in proportion, and all will in the truest sen&o fiud the "investment" a sound one. Yesterday morning tho amount collected was somo' hundreds of pounds short of the mark; but "eleventh-hour" subscriptions name in freely, and the list closed with something liks £600 over and above, 'this burplus, however, and more, will not come amiss, for there are sure to be " extras," and the furnishing must also bo considered. The young men themselves have given money, Lime, and service, they worked " like Trojans," and " they have their reward." The effects of the movemeht 'are more far-reaching ' than could have baen foreseen. Already the example of Wellington is being quoted everywhere in Australia, with the result that emulation has been aroused', and the Y.'M,C.A. and kindred institutions are already Ending the benefit. Rivalry is sometimes a bad thing, but when it takes the form, of emulation in liberality and good worijs in general, it is undoubtedly a boon to tho communities concerned. In this particular matter Wellington— at present— holds " the record."
