EXCITEMENT AT YALDHURST.

[BY TEIEGBAI'H. — IOIESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 6th June. A lunatic, armed with a gun, provided exercise and excitement all day to-day for two constables and a number of residents in and around Yald-hui-Bt. Information came to town on Tuesday night that a madman was at large, and Constable Perniskie went out to deal with him. Guided by a local resident, he found tho lunatic at a late hour in a swamp, and after floundering through mud in a chase for an hour or two he had to give up pursuit for the time. Constable Andrews joined in the chase this morning, and after a long pursuit, at the end of which the madman took to some scrub, they persuaded some potato-diggers to join in the hunt. The lunatic had threatened to shoot whoever came near. As he was trying to climb a gato a boy named Pearson pluckily rushed in at him, while Constable Andrews snatched hold of the gun and managed to turn it towards the ground. As the maniac pulled both triggers the charges tore up the ground within an inch of the policeman's foot. The lunatic was then secured.
