In connection with the Springfield (Missouri) lynching incident,- the Grand Jury report that the three negroes hanged were innocent), ihe Sheriff and police are blamed. A mob took two negroes out of the Springfield gaol and hanged thtta on the. stathie of the Goddess of Liberty on the Court House building. A fire was then made under the bodies, which, were burnt Ito ashes! The negroes were charged I with assaulting white women. The mob afterwards returned to t!he gaol, and, securing a negro who was charged with murder, lynched him in the public square. The mob completely wrecked the gaol, and of a total of fifty prisoners all but six escaped.
