There has been a slackness in the Wellington engineering trade since tho end 1 of last year, but a little betterment has been lately manifested, though there is stilj room for improvement. The dairying industry has b««n providing a little employment for foundries of late, but dredging — which once occasioned a good deal of engineering work in this city — is dead. An odd repairing job comes along from tho W«et Coast of tho South, Island at raro intervals, but the surplusage of dredges constructed in the boom-time of years ago has prevented any recent orders being placed. In Dunedm there is some dredge-construction now in progress, a prominent firm being still busy on an order for South America. The timber dietricts around Wellington aro providing a fow orders, and two loghaulers for Taihape are now being turned out at the foundry of D. Robertson and Co. There is nope of further improvement in conditions being effected shortly, the calling of tenders for construction of railway locomotives in New Zealand being likely to give tv fillip to engineeT- ; iaz. generally.
