Major Lugard telegraphs that the Mahdi, who led the lecent rising, has died from wounds. The tebels are surrounded by the Sokoto native contingent, ■which is awaiting reinforcements. All the Emirs, remain loyal to the British. The rebels are chiefly outlaws and fugitives. METHODIST CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, This Day. The 'Methodist Confcionce discussed a memorial from the missionaries of Fiji, asking that they be recalled for borne work owing to their inability to administer legislation. It was decided to defer tho enforcement of tho Fiji Constitution until tho next general conference has dealt with tho subject. HARBOUR STEAMER PURCHASED. SYDNEY, This Day.
