SWIMMING SPORTS.

THORNDON AMATEUR SWIMMING 01/ÜB. The eighth annual carnival of the Thorndon Amateur Swimming Club was got off ftfc Thorndon Baths on Saturday. The tide w<ui high And the weather good, though the wind was a bit fresh during tho latter part of the afternoon. The Attendance was, not large— owing, no doubt, to the Melbourne-Wellington cricket batch. ' The • 200 yds Champion Teams Race provided the best finish of the sports. Thorndon toam «enb off their fastest man for the iirsfc fifty yards, and gained a good lead, which they maintained for another length i coming down the 160 Wellington got the lend. l?or tho lasbilnp Jenkins, of the Wellington team, left the boar,d with tho Thorndon man, and B, O. Freyberg (Swifts team) was about ljsec lftter. Preyberg "crawled" for 80 yards, gaining slightly, and then changed his stroke. Freyberg and Jenkins both drew away from the Thorndon matt, and with about 16yds to go, Freyberg "crawled" again, gaining inch by inch on Jenkins, who was swimming a great race* The finish was very exciting, Jenkins touching about l-6th of a second before the Swifts man. The 180yda Inter-club Handicap was a good race, B. C. Freyborg from scratch just beating Frank Roberts (13seo) by a toiidh. The Spring-board Dive event was closely contested, and tho diving was of a> very good standard, Tlio Swifts Club beat Thorndon Club at water polo by 3 goals to nil. The scorers for the winners were F. Wilton (z) and 1). O. Freyberg (1). Both theso player*, O. Moore, and G. C. Girdlestone showed a good ' knowledge of the game, and E. T. Hegglun, (R. A.
