WELLINGTON v. CANTERBi 01Y. THE VISITORS WIN THE TOSS, AND BAT. The 1 twentieth contest between teanw representing Christchuich and Wellington began' this afternoon under pleasant conditions on the Basin Reserve. Canterbury has fourteen wins to its credit. The following are the teams: — Canterbury. — A. Anthony, J. H. Bennett, C. Boxshall, S. T. Callaway, J. D. Lawrence," K. M. Ollivier, S. Orchard, W. Patrick, E. Frankish, A. Sims (captain), and H. Whitta, Wellington's team.— C. Hickson, J Hutchings, J. J. Mahony,' J. P. Blacklock, C. P. Blacklock, K. Tucker, W. Redgrave, E. F. Upham, W. S. Brice, H. VV. Monaghan, and W. Gibbes. K. Tucker was elected captain of tho Wellington team, but Sims beat him in the toss, and Canterbury had first turn with the bat on an excellent wicket. C. P. Blacklock kept wickets for the local team. The umpffes were Messrs. D. M'Kenzie and S. Lambert. The following is the order in which the Canterbury men will bat : — Sims, Ollivier, Lawrence, Callnway, Whitta, Orchard, Anthony, Bennett, Patrick, Frankish, Buxshall. The game started at 2.20 o'clock, Sims scoring a single off Upham's first ball and Ollivier hit the fourth ball for 3. , Gibbes took the bowling from the northern end with the wind, and with th© last ball of his 'first over the lef t-hander bowled the Canterbury captain, Sims playing the well-pitched ball on to his wicket. s—l —2. Gibbes sent down three successive maidens and had captured a wicket. Ten runs went on the board for twenty minutes' play. Stumps are to be drawn this afternoon at 6 o'clock, and play will be resumed at 11 o'clock on Monday, and the luncheon I adjournment will be from 1 to 2 o'clock.
