Cable advice was received from London by the Wellington police to-day stating that a man aamoj Samuel M'Shane had been, found in possession of property stolen from the shop of Morris Fruhauf, pawnbroker, Willis-street. M'Shane arrived in London by the Paparoa, which sailed from Wellington two days after the robbery occurred. In consequence of the cable message two informations were laid against M'Shane, one charging him with having stolen property from the shop of Mr. Fruhauf, and tho other charging him with having received stolen goods. Extradition proceedings were subsequently taken before Mr. W. P. James, S.M. i'Shane is said to be a married man whose wife and young family reside in Wellington. He is a tailor by trade, and for some three years was employed by one of the leading tailors in Wellington. Chief Detective M'Grath will go to Lozdon to bring M'Shane back. • A Press Association telegram from Christchurch says it is understood that the decision of Cnbinet in regard to the .four postal officials at Christchurch who were suspended owing to .the voucher trouble will be definitely announced tomorrow or on Thursday. On Friday last a paragraph in the Evening Post suited that, although Cabinet had a fortnight previously recommended his Excellency the Governor to commute the death sentence passed on Lionel Terry for the murder of a Chinaman in Haining-street, no reply had been received from his Excellency. This item of news was evidently telegraphed to Auckland, because on Saturday a message arrived from Auckland to the effect that Lord Plunket had not received the Cabinet's recommendation. This intolerable and painful position was obviously due to some Departmental somnolence, and the vital document was, it is surmised, reposing in a pigeon-hole while the days passed swiftly to the statutory date oS execution. The omission was hastily rectified, and on Monday the suspense was ended, and the Governor's approval of the commutation of the sentence was received. The sentence of life-imprison-ment carries hard labour with it. Last year the respective winners were Wellingtonterrace and Oamaru North. At Northland to-morrow afternoon and evening a Christmas tree and sale of work will be held at the schoolroom.
