GENERAL BOOTH'S SCHEME.

A MISUNDERSTANDING. [rBBSS ABSOCIATION.I LONDON, 14th October. General Booth, when shown the question asked by Mr. Higgins in the Federal Parliament of Australia, calling attention to the statement said to have been made by the head of the Salvation Army /that Australia was hampered by the industrial Labour party remarked : — "There is a misunderstanding. I did not make such a sweeping statement. I stated some time ago that one State in particular opposed me. I recently gave Mr. vVatson special credit for his attitude in respect to emigration." Interviewed by a representative of the Daily Chronicle, General Booth said : — " We are not yet ready for ambitious colonisation. When more capital is available colonisation will proceed. It is now a question of emigration. People are ready to go, but we want reasonable assistance from Australia or tho Home Government." SUITABLE IMMIGRANTS REQUIRED. MR. DEAKIN'S AND MR. WATSON'S VIEWS. (Received October 16, 9.26 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. At the inaugural meeting of tho Immigration League, Mr. Deakin, tho Federal Premier, advocated the necessity of suitable immigrants to develop the country. They would come, he said, if the slan-' derers of Australia were chased down. Mr. Watson, leader of the Labour party, generally supported tho movement without committing himself to details. If General Booth could send men prepared to make a new venture and givo some assistance towards their making a home, ho saw no reason why any objection should . be raised. On the other hand he believed every assistance should be given to General Booth.
