THE NEW DESTRUCTOR.

NOTES FROM THE SPECIFICATIONS The site proposed by the City Engineer's plans for the new Destructor for Which tenders are now being called is on tho boundary to the north and east of the Corporation's yards off Clyde-quay, and beyond the site of the present Destructor. Tho result of the erection of the new works in the position sketched out by Mr. Morton will be that on the completion of the works a more convenient re-aiTdngement of the departments operating in the Corporation yards wilt be possible. Tenders for the new Destructor are to be returnable by the Ist March of next year. The installation is to be of most up-to-date requirements and complete in every respect. The plant to be provided by tho successful contractor is to be capable of thoroughly destroying and reducing to a hard vitreous clinker ordinary un6creen> ed house, market, and trade refuse, as received from the Corporation dust cart& and private vehicles, without creating any nuisance by noxious fumes, smoke, or dust arising from tho burning of the refuse The minimum quantity of stnS to be dealt with by the Destructor daily is Get down at 120, tons in the specifications, but favourable consideration will be givea to designs capable of extension to deal with 150 tons of refuse daily, with. in. creased engine-room accommodation. Tenderers are to state the quantity of refuse they guarantee to burn in each cell per day, and the necessary labour required in connection therewith. The residue of clinker and ashes combined will require to be not more than 35 per cent, of the quantity of refuse treated. The destructor is to be of a high temperature type, and tenderers are to state clearly what temperature they guiranteo^to maintain in the cells or combustion chambers. Tenderers aro further advised to^o arrange the buildings, cells, and other portions of the new installation that the present destructor may remain in full operation until the new works are constructed. In the event of this latter condition not being possible, considerable expense would be incurred by the Corporation in the disposal of household refuse during the interim period, and such additional expense would require to be considered in deciding upon the installation to bo adopted. It is proposed to use tho boat generated in tho burning of the refuse in providing steam for driving the existing 150 h.p. triple expansion condensing engine in use in the drninage system, and also for driving a clinker-mill, and any surplus power (at present impossible to estimate) is to be used' for generating electricity for light ing the city. The existing chimney used by the pre-t sent destructor i* to ho utilised for tho , new works.
