SWIFT BICYCLE ROAD RACE.

A considerable amount of interest was taken in the Swift Bicycle Road Race, tho first of a series of handicap road races promoted by the Adams Star Cycle Company, over a course of seven miles from tho Kelburne Kiosk to the Karori 'bus stables and back. About 1500 spectators witnessed the event at the Kelburne end, and along the route the interest was equally keen. Oat of 29 entries 24 competitors went to the post. They were— O. M. Gardner (scratch), A. M'Carrison (30sec), F. A. Cramp (linin), E. R. Cramp (lmin SOsec), A. J. Sin- j clair (1 mm 45sec), P. Mackay, J. Jones, | and J. Williamson (2mm), W. E. Corbett and E. C. Sawtell (2min 15sec), S. Taylor, A. T. Fellows, and H. C. Fisk (2min 30sec), A. Bradley (2min 45sec), H. Haywood and L. L. Easton (3min), N. Jonassen, R. E. Power, and D. O'Sullivan (3min 15sec), O. Stanley and H. Deut mm 30scc), A. Le Compte aud E. C. Young (3min 45sec), and W. Tyrrall (3 mm 50sec). In spite of the rain which fell durisg the morning, very creditable performances were put up by the first four riders, E. C. Young, the winner, covering me distance in 22rain 55sec. Tyrrall, the limit man, was sent away by Mr. W. Ross, who acted as starter and timekesper, shortly after three, but he did not ride many yards before coming to grief, and retired from the race. Taylor and Gardner, the scratch man, also dropped out owing 'to mishaps at an early stage of the race. Young was the first man to pass the turning point at Karori, about len minutes after starting, followed by Le Compte, two minutes later. Corbett and Fisk were the next to complete tho first stage. On the return journey Corbett fell, when in a good position, and but for his mishap would have been closer to the winner at the finish. Young rode ' well all through the race, and maintained the lead throughout. W. E. Corbetfc was second, time, 23min 47sec; A. T. Fellows third, time, 24min 13sec; H. C. Fisk fourth, time, 24min 32sec. Others to finish were (in the order ntimedV— E. R. Cramp, M'Carrison, Le Compte, Easton, F. A. Cramp, Dent, Jones, Mackay, Haywood Jonassen, Sinclair, Stanley, and O'Sullivan. The rest straggled in. The race was well managed by the following officials :— Judges, the Hon. T. W. liislop (Mayor of Wellington), Mr. A. C. Pearce (Mayor of Karori), and Mr. E. L. Chaffey; referee, Mr. C. Sominervillc; timekeeper and starter, Mr W Ross; road umpire. Mr. 11. R. Dix; turning-point stewards, Messrs. D. Adams, L. Bruce, and E. WaUh ; road stewards, Messrs. H. Wood, S. Boyd, L A. Benzoni, W. Makin, J. Hughes, A. Lee, H. Benzoni, J. Wilson, J. Loouey, and P. Coffey; secretary, Mr. W. J. Richards ; handicaper, Mr. Ulic Shannon. .After the conclusion of the race Corbett signified his intention of entering a protest against tho winner, Young, on the ground that the latter on entering had declared "no performances," a statement which it wim alleged was incorrect.
