The following (from the 'Melbourne ■ Age) would oeem to indicate that there ,is considerable rooitl for r-efffrm in tha provision ontide for country teachers by the Education Department of l Victoria : "No wonder the girl is pasty-iaced and white" is a oentenco in one of the reports of Mrs. Woods, supervisor for tho j housing of girl-teachers in .the country, to the .Minister of Education. 'Mr. Sachse has received ths first batch of reports from Mrs. Woods, who w46 recently appointed tb -exercise a mothwlv supervision of young female teachers in tho country, and the remark quoted was in reference to a «ase in »yhich a small .country school was 'h?ld in a mb3t unsuitable building. Taking tho Teports as a whole, Mr. Sachse finds that in tho large majority of ca«£s tho accommodation appears to be fairly Gufflciont. .Mrs. Woods finds a general dLsoositiou on the part of .vsidents who houee fha ■teachers to provido indispensable requirements t-or the- comforb and general sanitary convenience of the young %vomcn. in a few cases the accommodation has been found to bo very bad. Mr. Sach6o is impressed with the alarming prevalence of anasmia among female teachers st.itloncd in the country, and ho is auviiod -that Ihia is largely <h:e to improper .food and lark of healthy sanitary conditions. Recently he had before him .-twenty-tflx ■applications for leave of absence ' owing to illnses, nnd o! these tha cause in eight cases was $ntemia.
