NEWTOWN CLUB. At .the Victoria Hall last night, Mr.. J. P. Luke (President) faced the largest meeting of the Newtown Club since its inception. In moving- the adoption of the report and balance-sheet Mr. Luke congratulated the clup on its record last season in tho eeniot contest. Mr. Luke regretted the scarcity of playing grounds in 'the city, and that at< present there did not appear any sign of this want being remedied. The chairman referred in glowing terms to iho recent 'handsome gifts of Mrs. W. R. Williams, but he coiuidered ohe of the noblest gifts "would be a recreation ground for Wellington.' In concluding his interesting remarks, Mt. Luke hoped that when tho strain of 'the present nfr. cessities for the city was ' lessened, tho municipal authorities would tackle this question. Th<* officers for ' tho ensuing season are as follows : — Patron, tho Hon. T. W. Hialop,- Mayor- of Wellington; President, Mr. J. P. 'Luke; Vice-Pre-eidents, Messrs. W o ' H. P. Iwenty-eight new membeTa weTe elected. question relating to thc^ proposed alteration ol the rule governing the junior and third-^hws championship was referred to the Management Committee. .The Chairman announced that trophies .had been promised by the following: .Messrs. E. Pay, H W. Davis, J. Danks, jun., and S. Alpe! Mr. Luke also promised his usual mone^ tary contribution. Votes of thanks were passed to donors of trophies, retiring officers, Mr. A. Collins (the club'u scorer for last season), and the pf«6s. At the Newtown Cricket Club's annual meeting last night, Mr. F. K. foiling, a member of the present management committee of the association, declined nomination, as one of.' 'the, club's delegates to the association. Mr. Kelling stated that the association had Bur? mounted its many struggling' years of weak finances, and after a period of eighteen years' service he preferred to give way to younger members of the club. Mr. J. P.- Luke, the Chairman eulogised the many important matters in which Mr. KeJling had assisted in connection with the game in Wellington Province. Mr. VV. A. Worth conir plimented the retiring delegate on assisting the association .to play fifteen against the Australian .Eleven-W-facfc which had largely replenished ' the" coffers of the association. Mr. F. K. Kelling, why founded the present popular third-class chaanpionsh'ip in. " '89," thanked tho members for the kind Tejnarks which had fallen. The retiring delegate's decision was a complete surpriso to the members of the aJub. *- rj i n6 r. City 'Reserves Committee of tho Uty Council recommended on Thursday night ithafc . all tenancies of! dressingrooms nt tho Basin Reserve bo cancelled, and that the whole of the rooms be placed under the control of the Wellington Cricket Association upon the understanding that ithe Association allocate tie rooms between the whole of the cricket clubs, and be responsible for payment of rent to the Council. The report, of which this portion was a part, 'was referred back to the Committee. ,- > AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN AVERAGES TO TIIE EDITOB. Sir,— "Felix" is, of course, a high authority on matters relating to the game of cricket, but it does not follow thab he is up-to-date as regards, such purely local matters as English averages. As the averages of the Australians now in England are to bo considered by the light of those local conditions, I am of opinion that "Felix" is wrong in considering tho Irish and Scotch' eleven-aside matches to be not first-class. My reason for this ben Hef is that the Athletic News (of ManChester),* which 'S looked upon as a leading authority on the game, includes in its periodical list of averages the figures gained m the Irish and Scotch matches. As the averages are headed "First-class averages" it is absurd to suppose that such a paper would include second-class figures in its list, more especially as no distinction is made between English and Australian players, ahd if the colonials were allowed to include second-class figures it would be unfair to English, players who do not play in such matches. If an Australian player had beaten all English players, even though his figures included .the Iri&h and Scotch matchos, ho would be placed at the head of the list. Undoubtedly both matches are classed as first-class, and as a matter of fact such classification is no new thing. — I nni, •tc, . ' 1 WEKA. Bth September. ' ' ■
