MATCH AGAINST MANAWATU AND HAWKES BAY. PALMERSTON, 6th September. There were a clear sky and a dry, fast ground to-day for the match Australia v. Manawatu and Hawkes Bay combined. About six thousand persons were present. The visitors lud the best back team, but professed to be weak in the forward division through injuries sustained at Dunedin. The following were the teams: — Australia —B. Smith, Wickham, Penmann, Russell, M'Lpan, Anlezark, Woods, Burdon, Oxslade, Clarken, Lucas, Hirschberg, Judd, Swannell, and Murnin. Manawatu — Skelley, Scott, Fun-ie, Hewitt, Stalker, Ward, Ongley, Munro, M'Carthy, Alex. M'Minn, W. Smith, Carlson, M'Nae, Johnston, and Galloway. The Rev C. C. Harper was referee. The Australians, particularly the forwards, made the pace very willing. The backs were clever and clean at taking the ball, but, with the exception Of Woods and Penmann, were inclined to pass erratically, or afc wrong moments, and thus lacked a certain ability to score. Wooda at half played a 'great game, initiating^ almost every passing attack arid defending cleverly. The lipe-work of the forwards was superior, while in the scrum they adopted a phalanx-like formation and screwed, but did not seem to beat Manawatu for the ball. Their two-half tactics cime off superior as against one winger, the Manawatu half being pounced upon before he had a chance to do anything. In the first spell M'Nae scored for Manawatu and Ward converted. M'Leari crossed the Manawatu line, and Wickliam kicked a goal from a niark. The game ended — Australia ..< »., ... 7 Manawatu ... /.. ... 5 NELSON v. WAIRARAPA. NELSON, 6th September.. A football match Nelson v.
