POLITICAL NOTES.

~* . BOXING. - The Select Committee of the' House which was set up to consider the question of the control of boxing met this morning, and Mr. C. A. C. Hardy was elected Chairman. It waa decided that the taking of evidence should commence on next Wednesday week, and that each side should be allowed to call three witnesses. ' ' * _ A NEW SUGGESTION.,'. . .. Speaking on the land question last night Mr. Vile suggested that Crown lessees under the Land for Settlements Act should be allowed to purchase their holdings, but that they should pay 10s an acre over and above the price paid by the Government for the land. This would give the Crown a sum equal to £375,000 if the whole of the lessees took advantage of the provision. A eale of work was opened at St. •Mark's schoolroom this afternoon, and will be open to-night. Brisk business was done at the sale of work held in St. Thomas's Schoolroom last night in aid of the parish funds. The following were the stallholders: — Refreshments, Mssdamea Phillips and Wright; plain work, Mesdames Lee and Thompson; St. Agnee's Guild, Mkses Wakelin and Smith ; sweets, Mesdames Bowen and Croll ; fine arts, Mieses Allen and M'CoIl; flowers,. Miss Edmunds; fancy, MLss May Edmunds. The choir contributed musical selections under the baton of Mr. White, organist. The sale is to bo concluded this evening. The Fire Brigade was called out about 12.30 to-day to a fire at a house, No. 14 Hawkestone-crescent, occupied by Mr. Greville, and owned by the ' Hon. T. 1 W. Hislop. No damage was done, the outbreak being extinguished by the occupants of* the house. _____ A No-License address will be delivered by the Rev. L. M. Isitt at tho Sydneystreet Schoolroom to-morrow evening at 8 o'clock. This is the first meeting of a short campaign to be held in the city. There was a fairly large gathering present in the Thorndon Mcthod:6t Church last evening to meet this year a Home Mission deputation. The Rev. H. L. BlamiTes presided, and briefly introduced the Revs. Hono Hare and W. Gittos. In reference to the latter, it was stated that hia connection with the Maori mission will have extended over fifty years by the time the next annual conference 6its (noxt February), and he i 3 still, at .the age of 76, hale and hearty. Both speakers delivered addresses, the Rev. Hone Hare enlarging on the hindrances to tho work rausod by taking liquor into Maori settlements and inciting the natives to desecrate ithe Sabbath. Tho Rev. Gittos traced the work from its earliest beginnings, and said that now tho work had mado a decided forward movement. The great evil to be combated was gTog. The rev. gentleman concluded with an earnest appeal for further financial assistance from the members of the Methodist Church. Messrs. Levien, Shallcrass and Co. will soil drapery, on behalf of Mr. Daroy Ford, to-morrow and Saturday.
