NEGLECTED CHILDREN AND THE STATE.

At a meeting of women held to-day to discuss iho question of "Neglected Children and tho State," resolutions were passed :— (1) Urging ths establishment of cottage 'homes ; (2) thai tho State should provide for tho proper maintenance, supervision, -and education •'of illegitima'to children, and that parents should be obliged to contribute according to their means to the support of their children; (3) that children where paternity is proved shall possess legal etatuo with those born in wedlock, and shall ue registered in tho name of the futhor; (4) that a public pfficer (who may bo a, woman) bo appointed, whose duty it would bo before registration of 'birth of Mi illegitimate child is completed, to discover parentage, where possible, with a view of enforcing propov maintenance of 'the child. \ resolution waa passed, thanking Mr. Taylor, M.H.It., antt n.embcra voting with him, for endeavouring to expunge the clauoo in the Electoral Bill prev3iiting women, being eligible as members of tho Legislature, and it was Tesolrcd to urge strongly .that tho clauso should bo deleted.
