A charge of pretending to practise witchcraft upon a Maori, who subsequently died, was preferred against an elderly woman named Mary Ann Hill, alias Madam Jordan. Titjj, STATE COALMINES ENQUIRY. ■On Wednesday, before the Board of Enquiry into matters relating to the State coalmines, evidence was given by " the I managing agent for the sale and distribution of State coal (Mr. Macdougall) that orders supplied to the mines were largely in arrears. On Thursday morning a. Post reporter, on application through th© secretary to the Chairman of, the Board (Six. John Hayes, Inspecting Engineer to the Mine* Department), was supplied, through the secretary, with a summary of a telegram from Mr. Bishop (who supervises the mines) stating inter alia that arrears are "comparatively slight."' This telegram was the last evidence published by the Post. On Thursday afternoon tie ieporter applied to the Chairman of the Board for some further evidence supplied in writing to the Board by the managing agent. The Chairman assured the repoiter that the further evidence contained no matter of public interest. After some discussion it was arranged that the reporter should call again in half an hour. He did. The Chairman^ then supplied him with a summary (in lieu of the- whole) of the managing agent's further evidence, iho summary is as follows : — "Mr. Macdougall- forwarded a statement allowing that ' from Ist' April, 1904, to 30th June, 1905, 113,574$ tons, having a value of £113,223 16s 7d, had been &upplicd to Government Departments, and to the public 46,345} tons, valued at £28,959 On lld._ He also stated that the cost cf his office expenses in Wellington amouutf (I to 2 l-9d per ton ; that no bad nebts liatl been incurred; and claimed to have micceeded in effecting a very considerable saving in freights and other items."
