• - WILLIS'S SAFE. ri-HESS ASSOCIATION.] SYDNEY, 17th August. * W. N. Willis's safe was nob opened to-day by the Land Commission, but the Crown took possession of Mrs. Willis's box at the safe deposit. Some interesting correspondence was read before the Lands Commission at Sydney relative to transactions between Mr. W. N. Willis and one of his clients — Mr. John Campbell, of Waterloo Station, in the Narromine district. The latter admitted having paid fees amounting to £245, and said he had agreed to make the amount £400 should Mr. Willis succeed ia obtaining un improvement lease. Mr. Willis having failed to get the lease, the witness applied for a refund of the amount 'in accordance with the agreement" between them, but instead of making .any refund Mr. Willis sent him an account for over £300. In the course of a letter to Mr. Campbell, Mr. Willis remarked:— "l do not know whother you lake me for a fool or a philanthropist, but I assure you you will find me neither one thing nor the other." He further declared that such "a piece of brazen effrontery" had not come under his notice during the twenty years he had been in business. Mr. Campbell threatened legal proceedings, but the matter was settled, Mrs. Willis undertaking to return the amount, 1«8<i £80 which Willis has claimed as out-of-pocket expenses. In the earliei part of the correspondence, Mr. Willis said : — "Please do not again mention in your letters the fees ; these can always bo better arranged verbnlly between us. In the meantime I would like you to send mo a cheque for £25. I need this for a special purpose in connection with your ense, which I will explain when we meet." Mr. Cumpbell naid he never got any explanation, but ho .sent Willis the money. x
