WORKMEN'S CARS. TO THE BDTTOH.

Sir,-— Thero a*© some thing?, in this world of ours which require explaining, .and, in my estimation, one of these aubjecte a that which stands as the heading to this letteT. , Now, sir, I contend that the "workmen's " car is a nonsensical thing. Why fahould the " labourer "■ — who.conws under the category of "workman" — why should he, I say, be allowed 'to travel cheaper on the cars than tho man who drives a quill? The "workman ' (socalled) gets somewhere in the vicinity of £3 (three pounds) por week— and the clerk, df as much, not more, so, therefore, why discriminate? The Council should at once put a stop to this system ; it should abolish 'the so-called " work-men'a cars " at once, o* else make every oar a -workman's • and count every passenger a ',' workman." Every ono who uses the ca,ra is a workman, for those vvho are not workmen ride in th<>ir carriages. • '• * ' * As tilings are at present, I have (being a clerk) to put op' a soft ahjrt and «mear my face with burnt cork on quitting my oflioe in tho evening — all so that I Jiiay rjdo on the cheaper system. ,If the Council abolishes the " workman's " car this trouble will (in my cdae) disappear! This story, of course, is gnupfl truth. — I am, etc.,; . D. LYRE.* Wellington, 7th August, 1905.
