THE LIFEBOAT FUND. OFFER OF A NAPIER CRAFT.

The Lifeboat Fund Committee, presided over by Mr. Jas. Moore, met at tho Missions to Seamen's Institute yesterday afternoon. Messages of apology were- received from tho Premier, and the Hon. Hall-Jones, Minister of Marine. An offer to sell a lifeboat now at Napier wus contained in a lengthy letter read by tho chairman. The communication stated that the craft was sent out from Home by tho National Lifeboat Associatior to the Government of New Zealand, who handed it over to the Harbour Board at Napier as the Hawkes Bay centre vraa considered the most likely place to require a lifeboat. It was afterwards sold by the authorities because there was no use for it, they having invested in oil launches. The lifeboat was only used once, when the Northumberland got into difficulties at Napier. On that occasion the little craft arrived on the scene too late, the Northumberland having been driven ashore. The letter went on to state that tho lifeboat had' provision for eight oars, a steer-oar and a carrying capacity of twenty-five to thirtyfivo additional men. The vessel was owned by a shipowner, who was prepared to sell her <n first-class order at £320 f.o.b. A similar boat ordered from Home would cost fully £1000. During the ensuing discussion it was mentionod that the boat if purchased would require to be fitted with an oil engine. An offer by the Minister of Marine to have the vessel examined and reported on was accepted with thanks, and it was decided with a view to' rais-' ing funds to place boxes at the seaside resorts in the Wellington province, and at the Government railway stations, subject to the approval of tho authorities, A suggestion was made that the committee might also grange a lifeboat Saturday, when a demonstration with boats, etc., would be held in order to raise- funds. Mr. E. L. Burgess was appointed secretary of the organisation in place of Mr Jas. Dykes, who recently resigned from the office. Tho meeting then adjourned sine die, with a view to the Premier and the Minister of Marine being in attendance.
