' WELLINGTON RUGBY UNI6N. A meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union was held last evening, the' following being present : — Messrs. J. T. King (in the chair), H. M'lntyre, D. D. Weir, L. Jordan, T. Hunter, O'Sullivan, A. Stevens, W. Hales, D. M'Kenzie (secretary). The Petone Fire Brigade and the Gear Company were granted permission to play a match on Saturday next. The Poneke and Oriental Clubs wrote notifying that they are desirous of withdrawing from the senior championship, provided trhafc by so doing they do not forfeit any games. In support of their request the two clubs contend that interest in the championships is now dead. After some discussion it was decided that the clubs should" not be allowed to drop out. The fourth-class game Oriental A versus Johiiflonville, which was stopped shortly before time through the bursting of the ball, was ordered to be replayed. The Wajrarapa- Union wrote accepting the 16th August for the challenge match with Wellington for the Ranfurly Shield, and suggested Mr. P. Mackie as referee. It was decided to suggest 23rd September as the date for the Manawatu-Welling-ton representative future. A Petone fourth-class player ordered oft the field, for nleged offensive language was suspended during the pleasure of the Union. The New Zealand Union has approved the following matches as challenge games for th« Ranfurly Shield: — Wairarapa 16th August, Hawkea Bay 23rd August, Auckland 26th August, Buller 30th September, Taranaki and Manawatu, no dates fixed. It was decided to endeavour to arrange a match between the Wednesday representatives and the Saturday junior representative*} for 23rd iAst. The Petone-Old Boys charity game, Jto be played on Saturday 'next, is to be in aid of the District Hospital, and the Union's Accident Insurance Fund, each ot which will- receive half of the proceeds.
