NEW ZEALAND CANDLE COMPANY.

A meeting of shareholders in the New Zealand Candle Company (Limited) was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. N. Reid presiding. In moving the adoption of the i report and balance-sheet, the chairman stated that the past financial year had been an unsatisfactory one for trading — the ■worst of many bad years experienced since 1900, when the duty on candles was remitted. Operations in the tallow department for the past year did not compare favourably with the preceding one. .The reason for this was that the price paid for the raw material, through excessive competition, was high, whilst the prices realised in London were particularly low. Mr. Beauchamp, in seconding the motion, expressed regret at the unsatisfactory result of the year's working, but said this result was'looked for in view of the very substantial reduction made in tho duty on candles in 1900. It had been an uphill fight for the company since that date against the importations of English, " Burmah, and American candles. The protection afforded tho locally-made candles was insufficient. All other similar companies in New Zealand were in the same ■unfortunate position as the New Zealand Candle Company. Unless more protection is afforded the industry in the colony, declared Mr. Beauchamp, it is bound to go to the wall. An endeavour should be made prior to the general election to make tariff reform one of the main planks of the political platform. The total debit balance on the year's trading was nearly £200. This, included directors' fees, •whichj however, had not been drawn for the pant .six months. Mr. Kerumly,/. 6peaking as a considerable shareholder, considered the immediate prospects were not encouraging, and that, if there was no prospect of the tariff being altered;" he would not be warranted in supporting a continuance of the company. He would prefer to see tlio company wound-up within the near future. The motion was carried. ■Messrs. M. Kennedy and D. J. Nathan, the retiring directors, we're re-elected, and Mr. A. S. Biss was appointed auditor.

Inspector Elison received a message from Eketahuna this morning stating that the public school at Hukanui was destroy,ed by fire last night.
