KARORI ROAD-WIDENING SCHEME.

THE ENGINEER'S REPORT CONSIDERED. The road-widening scheme for the Borough of Karori was discussed at a speciaF meeting of the Karori Borough Council last evening, presided over by the Mayor (Mr A. C. Pearce). A report by Mr. R. R. Richmond, borough engineer, on the proposed work, was submitted. It stated that the final survey-traverses, levels, and cross-sections had been completed from the Botanical Gardens to Spiers' stables; also from the viaduct, through Northland to the Orangi. Kaupapa road. The engineer recommended that a footpath bo constructed throughout, six feet wide (including kerb) on the "inner" side of roadway. This ■would facilitate efficient outward drainage, and prove an economical method of doing the work. He had arrived at a rough estimate as to cost, and was of opinion that a loan of about £10,000 would bo required to carry out the scheme and to compensate owners of property fronting certain parts of the road. A long discussion ensued as to probable compensation claims in the event of certain grades on the roads being reduced. Eventually the Mayor was authorised to confer with the borough solicitor in regard to providing proper consent and agreement forms between certain ratepayers and the Council, and the engineer was empowered to interview the various property owners in regard to probable claims. A general direction was given to the engineer to place tho footpath on the outside of the road wherever practicable, and to place jarrah timber kerbine instead of concrete in made ground likely to slip. It is anticipated that the engineer will have ready completed drawings of the scheme within two week*), .
