IRON BONUS BILL
♦ THE FEDERAL MEASURE. [press association.! 'MELBOURNE, 9th August. The Encouragement of Manufactures Bill, better known as the Iron Bonus Bill, -was Teintroduced, and read a first time. The Bill is practically the same as the measure introduced last year. New clauses have, however, been added, requiring the payment of wages at rates to be fixed by the President of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, and the latter is also given power to fix a fair selling price for goods on -which bounty is paid, and those receiving bounty will not be able to charge above the rates so fixed. Power is -also given to tho Stafe to resume ironworks after a fixed period. The schedule provides t/he following■bounties: — Pig-iron made from Australian ore, puddled bar-iron made from Australian pig-iron, steel made from Australian pigiron, bounty 12s per .ton; total amount which may be authorised, £260,000 ; date of expiry of bounty, Ist January, 191] . Galvanifed iron, wire netting, iron and 6teel tubes, or pipes (except rivetted or cast). — Not more than 6in internal diameter, rate of bounty, 10 per cent. ; total amount, £50,000; date of expiry, Ist January, 1909. Reapers and binders. — First 500, bounty £8 each; total, £4000; date of expiry, Ist July, 1907.
