CUSTOMS DUTY ON PILLS.
[BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, This Day. Judgment was given by Mr Justice Williams to-day in a special case stated for the opinion of the Court with reference to Bile Beans. The company imported one million pills by. the Warrimoo, and paid duty as druggists on sundries valued at £133 6s Bd. The Customs claimed the pills should be treated as proprietary me- . dicine, valued at £1250, and demanded £184 4s additional duty. The company paid the money under protest, and the question for the Court .was whether the pills were patent or proprietary medicine in the meaning of the Act, and as to whether the facts disclose a dispute as to the proper rate of duty within the meaning of section 52 of the Customs Act, 1832. The Judge decided that the pills are. not a patent medicine, and the facts disclose a dispute. \ —
