PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Williams have returned to Wellington after an extended trip to England and the Continent. Mr. C. J. Fulton, Chief Government Hemp Grader for the colony, left for Auckland this morning. The Minister for Customs (Hon. C. H. Mills) will return from Picton by the Pateena to-night. The Governor will leave Auckland on 12th December on a visit to Wanganui, returning to tho northern city on the following Saturday. Mr. Hayes, Inspecting Engineer of the Mines Department, left for the West Coast to-day. He will not be back until Christmas week. Mr. G. R. Baudinet, of the Longroom Customs staff, Wellington, has been transferred under promotion to Port Chalmers, as tide surveyor. He leaves Wellington on Tuesday next. The Auckland Harbour Board has been advised that Mr. Kite, the Assistant Director of Works for the Admiralty, will reach Auckland in a few days for the purpose of inspecting the Calliope Dock. At a smoke concert last evening the members of the Petone Rowing Club' presented one of their number, Mr. W. Keetley, with handsome souvenirs in honour of bis recent wedding. A wedding of interest in the district was celebrated at Johnsonville on Monday last, when Mr. L. J. Ell, of the Public Health Department, brother of Mr. H. G. Ell, M.H.R. for Cbristchurch, was married to Miss Violet Simeon. From a private cablegram received today we learn that Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nathan, accompanied by tlieir three daughters, will return to the colony per R.M.S. Athenic, to leave London on 12th January next. Mr. F. H. Haselden, who formerly represented Patea in the House of Representatives, returned from Capetown on Thursday evening by the steamer Ayrshire. He is accompanied by Mrs. Has- ; elden. The officers of the Public Works Department on Thursday presented Mr. C. E. Crawford with wedding gifts, the occai sion being his approaching marriage. In the absence of the Under-Secretary, the presentation was made by the Chief Clerk, Mr. Dumbell. Mr. J. C. Blackmore, Government Pomologi&t, has gone on a visit of inspection to the orchards of Alexandra, Clyde, and Roxburgh districts, Central Otago. On his return he will visit Akaroa, after which he will proceed to Marlborough and Nelson. Mr. James Witt, who has been appointed buyer for Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen for the fancy goods depart- : ment in New Zealand and Australia, passed through Wellington to-day. The local employees of the firm met Mr. Witt and presented him an enlarged photograph and a solid silver card case, suitably inscribed.
