LOSS OF A GUNBOAT. NEARLY THREE HUNDRED DROWNED.
LONDON, 12th October. While the Japanese gunboat Heiyen was doing guard duty in Pigeon Bay on the night of 18th September she struck a mine during a storm and foundered. Nearly tbjee hundred of the crew ivere drowned. Two petty officers and two sailors reached Chiopai Island, and were rescued. The mine exploded under the starboard side amidships. The boats were lowered, but were swamped, and the crew jumped overboard. A heavy sea was running.
