LOCAL AND GENERAL. . o Our commercial cables to-day show that Now Zealand 3 per cents, hava declined 40s as compared with a week ago. Tho fall is somewhat heavy compared with the movements of other giltedgod securities, and thero must be some special reason for it. A half-year's interest amounting to 30s per cent, is payablo on our 3 per cents, on tho Ist pros., and this makes the decline all the more significant. Is tho Government feeling tho pulse of tho London money market t At tho present time thero aro 3442 men employed on roada and railways by tho Government — 2151 being under tho control of the Public Works Department, ami 1291 under tho control of tho Department of Roads and Bridges. Tho number of men working on the North Island Main Trunk Railway is 945. The police state that there are at present in Wellington two notorious safedynamiters, and they advise business people to arrange for banking their cosh each day,
