The House met at 2.30 p.m. The Church Reserves (Canterbury) Bill was road a third time and passed. Mr. Wilford jvesentod a petition from tho'Wcllington Gas Company against the Wellington City Empowering (Gasworks) Bill being treated us a local Bill. The company contended that the Bill in a private Bill, and should be treated as such. The petition was referred to tho Joint Committee on Bills. Petitions wore presented against the employment of barmaids, und from natives in favour of Maoris being given equal rights with Europeans in regard to tho disposal of their lands. Mrs. Agnes Brierly, 25 years of age, died at a house in North-street yesterday afternoon. It appears that a woman named Honora Baesett called at deceased^ house about 10 o'clock in the morning, and found her ill in bed. Later in fcho day she left tho house, but returned again during the afternoon, and was present , when deceased expired .Charles Brierly, husband of deceased had not been living with his wife for a few weeks. He was out of town yesterday, but is expected to return to-day. It is surmised that death was due to natural causes. At an inquest held thia afternoon by Mr. Jas. Ashcroft, Coroner, the jury found that death was due to heart failure, caused by disease of the heart and other organs. At the Moturoa oil-boring works in Taranaki last week a considerable escape of gas occurred when tho drill loft the papa formation and ])enefcrated a sandstone stratum. Mud and w-afcer wore thrown to the height of 80ft, nnd bho newly - discovered "geyser" continued operations during tho whole of the afternoon. This is looked upon as a most favouraWo indication.
