Mr. James Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, left Auckland for Wellington yesterday. Mr. A. Quinlan has been appointed to succeed tho late Mr. J. O'Moara on tho Pahiatua Licensing Committee. Mr. J. W. Winton, tho well-known ventriloquist, who has been for some timo with the Dix Gaiety Company, leaves for Sydney to-morrow. Mr. Frank Clayton, of Iho head oftico of t'ho Bunk of New Zeulund, loft Wellington for Auckland this morning, having been promoted to tho head accountantship in tho Northern City. A party of Canadians, Mr. and Mrs. A. Campbell nnd Mr., Mrs., and Master M'Loan, nil of Toronto, arrived in Wollington from tho North lost night on tour, and nrc staying at tho Royal Onk Holol. Mr. T. IP. Byrno, of Sydney, who arrived in town last night, is atao staying at tho samo house. Tho appointment of Major Bmichop, C.M.G., to the command of tho Canterbury Military District is gazetted. No information is availablo regarding tho Government's intentions with regard to Colonol Porter, C.8., whoso placo Major Bauchop takes. A Press Association telegram from Dunodin states that Col. Bauchop was given an enthusiastic welcomo on his arrival at Port Chalmers. Tho Mayor road telegrams of wclcomo from the Premier, Mr. Allon, M.H.R., and othors. Nows lias beon roceived in Wollington of tho death, in Sydnoy yesterday, of Mr. Frank Moachum, eldest son of Mr. Charles Moacham, late of tho Now Zoaland Treasury. Tho deceased was born in tho colony, and was educated at the Mount Cook School and Wellington College After being in tho Accountant's Branch of tho General Post Office for somo timo, ho went to Sydnoy, and was for somo years accountant at Messrs. Gordon and Gotch's branch in that city. Subsequently he was in business for himself. Ho was marriod, but had no family. Tho cause of death was pneumonia. Lady Plimkot, accoinpa-nicd by two members of her family, paid a visit this morning to tho Sailors' Rest, where sho was rocoived by tho Hon. E. Richardson (Chairman of tho Committee), Messrs. A. H. Turnbull (Hon. Treasurer), and Francis Shaw (non. Secretary). In welcoming her Ladyship Mr. Richardson outlined tho object of the institution, which, he said, was now visited by closo on 1800 men per month. Tho ono great difficulty was want of funds, and he thought that if tho public generally know what the Rest was accomplishing, and how much it was in want of periodicals and light literature, thero would bo no trouble in increasing thoir resources. Her Ladyship's visit wonld help materially to draw attention to the work of tho institution. Lady Plunket was shown ovor tho Rest by Miss PycSponcor, tho Superintendent, and on leaving sho was givon threo choors by tho seafaring mrin present.
