Tho fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held lost night, nnd w«s attended by the Mayor (Mr. Aitken) and Councillors Smith, Wiltshire, Qodber, Kesne, Jorgonsen, Frost, Evnns, Luke, I«ard, Murdoch, JJarber, M'Lnren, Devine, nnd Cohon. In -reply to n, question, the Mayor stfttod that Mr. Flockton'a tender for the supply of chairs for the Town Hall haa not been received in time. Councillor Barber snid the Council would regret not having ordered a. different class of choirs lo those which were to be supplied. On the recommendation' of the Bylaws, Fire Brigade, and Lighting Committee, it whs resolved : —That one extra permanent fireman be appointed at the Central Fire Station ; that new lamps bo erected in Bolnnioal Gardens-rood and Ohhoroad; that the application of Messrs. Bethnne and Co. for a lamp at Alainedatemtce be not granted ; that the application of Mr. A. G. Kennedy for tho removal of 'a lamp at Hawkcstone-cres-cent bo not granted. The committee added that it had no recommendation to make on petitim from resident* of Ken-sington-street with reference to nuisance caused by boys playing in the streets, nnd that several electric lamps authorised to be erected at Brooklyn have not yet beer pub up, although ordered some months ago. Clark and Son be informed, in reply to their application for an extension of Parkterrace, that the Council cannot grant a permit to build to an unauthorised right-of-way, the conditions laid down when granting Park-torrace not having been complied with ; that Messrs. Kjrk nnd Wilson's application for the extension of Sicverston-terrace through Mrs Raymond's property bo granted on conditions to be laid down by the City Engineer ; that the necessary action up taken to abate the nuisance caused in the right-of-way at the rear of thp Duke of Edinburgh Hotel ; that tho suggestion of the Wellington Harbour Board that the Council should supply water free of charge for cthower baths at tho boat sheds, Clydequay, be not entertained ; that the Wellington Harbour Board be informed that tho Council cannot see its way to beur the cost of connecting their proposed new store with the drainage system ; that the application of the Patent Brick Company of Now Zealand, Limited, for permission to erect buildings and machinery at Sea-toun-road be granted ; that tho application of Mr. W. i±. Quiqk for the consent of tho , Council to two rights-of-way off Holloway-road for Mr. Huines, be granted ; that the application of Messrs. Crichton and M'Kuy for permission to construct a building at the corner of Woodward-street and Wellington-terrace bo referred to tho City Solicitor for a report ; that the application of Messrs. "Lloyd and Hill for lease of a portion of tho* Town Belt at Tinakori-road for the purpose of constructing a tramway in connection with their quarry be not granted i that a reply be forwarded to the seoretary of the Drivers' Union in terms of the City Engineer's report with respect to the dismissal of one of the employees ; that tho twelve drinking fountains authorised by the Council be placed in the positions suggested by the City Engineer ; that the application of Messrs. Fulford and Hill for permission to kill pigs at Wainui be not granted ; that the suggestions of tho City Solicitor with reference to the Standard Survey Bloclw bo agreed to by tho Council. The Mayor moved the adoption of the report with the exception of the clause referring to Evans Bay-road constructed by Palliser and Jones. With reference to the recom-. mendations that the Council should not supply water free of charge to the Harbour Board's boat sheds on Clyde-quay, and that tho Council could not bear the cost of connecting the Harbour Board's new staro with the drainage system, Councillor Izard moved that both matters should be referred back to the committee for further information. He said the Board wished to meet the convenience of the boating people who would use the boathouscs, and it would not mnke any profit by providing shower buths. The Board wanted its new store on Watcrloq-quay connected with the drainage system, because it proposed to erect latrinos in connection with the new building. Tho clause ro the shower baths was adopted, but the Council agreed to refer back the recommendations relative to the Board's application^ ro ita now store, also the recommendations as to the Evans Bay roads and Mrs. Heaton's letter as to an encroachment in Thompson-street. The Council declined to grant permission to Messrs. Crichton and M'Kay to erect a building at the corner of Wei-lington-terryice and Woodward-street. The matter of granting a permit lor a traction engine to carry machinery over the Evans Bay-road to Kilbirnie was left in the bands of the officers of the Council. Two tenders were sent in for the con* struction of an extension of Kussell-ter-xace through tho Town Belt to Houghton Bay -road. Neither waa accepted, and the City Engineer was authorised to carry out the work by day labour.
