STREET LIGHTING.

10 BE UNDERTAKEN BY THE CORPORATION. On the recommendation of tho Finance Committee, the City Council last night resolved that the City of Wollington Electric Light and Power Company bo given twelve months' notice, in terms of the agreement with tho company, that the Council intends to tako ovor tho public lighting of tho city. The Mayor, in moving the adoption of the report, stated that tho committeo found that tho Council had tho opportunity up to the 30th September next to givo the necessary twelve months' notice of its intention to cancel the contract with the Electrical Company. Thus would enablo tho Council to go to tho tnitcpiyers for a loan fot Ihe purposo of running iU» own street lighting. Tho committee had obtained an estimate from its electrical expert, which showed that the city, by doing its own lighting, could effect a a&ving of something like £1000 t. yeur and havo the street!* much better lighted than they were at present. Councillor Cohen— Thoy couldn't bo worse ! ' The Mayor was sorry to hear that. A Southern Councillor who attended the recent Municipal Conferenco had assured him that he hod been especially struck with the excellent lighting of the city of Wellington. A Councillor— He musb have been moonstruck. (Laughter.) The Mayor said tho committee was only recommending the Council to go in for its own street lighting. To attempt private lighting would mean a large outlay—probably £90,000. If the recommendation as to street lighting was agreed to they would borrow, say, £20,000 to purchase the existing requioito plant from the Lighting Company, ttnd supply the power from their own power house. The high tendon wires would be placed underground, and the of light* largely increased. It was proposed to light the main thoroughfares intersected by the tramways with tiro lamps at every second pole, half of the lights to be turned off at midnight. Tho other main thorough fares would be kighted with smaller arcs, and the remaining streets with Voree lights. Councillor Evans supported the report. Councillor Izard said that some valuftblo evidence had lately been given by an expert before the Bills Committee of Lho Houso on the subject of tho Electrical Syndicate's plant. Could that oviilence be obtained? The Mayor thought not. Councillor Izard suggested as an alternative that it might bo worth while . paying the expert a fee for his advice. The Mayor said he would see if the Avideuce was available. Tho report wo« unanimously adopted toy tho Council.
