UNIVERSITY EDUCATION.
[BY TELECRAm — I'BESB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 23rd August. At a meeting of tho University Collego Council it was resolvod to — (1) Ask Government for a grunt of £7000, to provido adequate buildings and efficient equipment in the establishment of the proposed School of Mines, and ulso a statutory grunt of £1500 per annum for salaries and maintenance in connection therewith ; (2) a grant of at least £20,000 for tho erection of a college, at a cost, say, of £20,000, tho grant for whioh will be required in addition to the grant already mentioned for tho School of Minos ; (3) that nn addition to tho present statutory grant of £400U per nnnum is urgently required, to enable (he collcgo to appoint professors and lectureiti. The committee added, in explanation, that the recommendations were made in pursuunce of a scheme of general expansion in tho educational Junctions of the college. Part of tho scheme wns the recognition of a policy of specialisation by the several colleges in certain subjects. The committee felt it unfair that whilo *Victoiia College (Wellington) was to receive £30,000 for buildings, Aucklan.d University College should bo satisfied with the present old and converted wooden buildings.
