« Tho Secretary for Agriculture (Mr. J. 3D. Ritchie) has" gone to Auckland. Mr. Justice Cooper returned to Wellington from Nelson this morning by tho .Penguin. A cablo message from Sydney states that Mr. W. A. Barton, son of Sir Edanund Barton, has beer, awarded the Rhodes Scholarship. Dr. Anderson, son of Mr. D. Anderron, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to England, returned yesterday by the Mokoia. Tue Mokoia's pawengers included Mrs. Brindley, wife of tho manager of the State Fire Insurance Department, and their family. A handsome music cabinet and a purse of sovereigns were presented last night to Mr. Charles Collins, organist of tho Vivian-strcef Baptist Church in recognition of his gratuitous services for the past fifteen years. Major Moore, recently in command of fine New Zealand Permanent Forces, who will le&v« for England to-morrow to rejoin th« Royal Artillery, was rresfuted yesterday by tho Wellington Dramatio ytudenls' Club, of which ho was a member, with an address and a. memento. Mr. Marcus Maries, Hansard Super'cisor, who has been on a trip to Great Britain and the Continent, returned by. the Mokoisi laat ovoning, in company with his sister, Miss Mnrkv, of Melbourne. Everywhere Mr. Marks met with the greatest hospitality, mid to be a New .Zealander seemed to be an- open sesame. The funeral of the late Mr. John Fleming, of MuriUu, took place at Karori this morning. Tho body wns brought in by ferry boat,, and a large number of the deceased gentleman's friends and acquaintance", as well as his immediate relatives, attended the rites, which were performed by the- Rev. W. Shirer, of St. James's Church, Newtown, Mr. J. H. Boundy, editor and proprietor of the Motueka Star, died in Nelson yesterday after a long illness. The deceased, who has left a widow and a grown-up family, was born in Nelson, and at the timo off hw death ho was a member of tho Nelson Education Board. He was connected with the Government Printing Office many years ago, and later on became part proprietor of tho Marlboiough Express. s Tho Rev. James Paterson, formerly pastor of St. Johii'a Church, Wellington, who returned by tho Mokoia yesterday from a round-the-world tup, reports tli.u he has enjoyed a delightful holiday, full of interest so far as it concerned nighta which were now, and especially pleasurable for the opportunities it afforded him of rooming through scenes of other days — days of his youth and early imunhood. Ho feels greatly benefited by tho trip.
