FATAL FALL OF TIMBER. [BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WAIHT, This Day. Two men, A. Mtithiiw and Daniel Wilson, who wie woiking in it p.ihs or small shaft above No. 2 level in tho Waihi Uold Mining Company's mine, were buried yesterday atti'inoon by v fall of cribbing timber, which linos the sidos of the puss. The accident was diwsovered at 4 o'clock, and four and a hulf hours later Wilson wn» got out'uninjuied, while Mathias was dead. The timber for a distance of about 30 feet up the puxs tumbled down on the men, who weie working immediately below. Wilson won pinned by the timber across bis middlo and lego. Mnthias was evidently knocked to tlie giound by tho falling timber, which crushed the life out of him. Tho men wow only divided by 'a foot, and immediately after tho accident spoke to each other, "MHthius saying : "I am done." Ho then groaned, and Wilson hetud no more. The fall occuned, Wilson consider*, at 1 o'clock. At tlic time they wero taking the cribbing to a height of 7ft to put in a stop. Deceiised was a well-known footballer. His people are very old residents of Tauranga. He leaves a young widow and an infant child.
