NEWTOWN LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of tho Newlown Licensing Committee was held at noon to-d*y, there being present: Rev. Q. Bond, and Messrs. R. M'Kcnaie, A. J. Hand, and E. Collie. The Chairman (Dr. M'Arfchur, S.M.) was absont through indisposition, and Rev G.- Bond was elected to the chair. Sergeant Mackay represented the police. On tho application of Mr. Weston, a renewal of the license of the Itjlond Bay Hotel was granted to W. Redmond. Mr. Weetou al«o applied for a renewal .of the Kcenso of the Newtown Hotel to H. G. Holdaworth. Mr. Weston said tenders were being invited for furnishing, and he gave his assurance that the furnisbiiig would bo carried out before Ist J«ly. On this assurance the renewal was granted. For lie Park Hotel, Mr. Morison applied for a renewal for F. Smith. He slated that the re-furnishing was 7>rocceding, nnd tho fire-escapes would bo fixed as required by the police. The roncwul was granted. On the same conditions the Committee granted renewals to Win. Hallcy, Kiibtr nae Hotel (Mr. Young), and B. Barclay, Grosvenor Hotel (Mr. Young). A temporary transfer of tho license of tie Park Hotel was granted to P. Doyle. Mr. M'Kcny,ie, speaking generally, said there had not been any evidence of great anxiety on the pait of 'any of the licensees to comply wilh the law in regard ta furnishing. It would not, he suid, Ins wise for applicants to consider that because the Committee had acted generously, they Mere going to -extend that generosity. Thoy would insist on the Jaw 'beiug carried out. l The Chairman said it must be understood that the licenses were granted on tfce condition that the requirements oi the law in regard to furnishing and fireescapes were complied with. If thoro was any lapse or failure it would bo dealt •with at the next quarterly meeting. This concluded tha business.
