MADAME COPK-DOWSING'S CONCERT.

Madame Cope-Dowsing and her pupils will mako their appearance in a concert to bo given in the Sydney-street Schoolroom next Wedfi.'scl.-Ty" evening, when a socially selected programme will be given for the purpose of illustrating Madame's success as a teacher. The programme provides for tome twenty-one items, and will include tlu* "Laughing Trio" from Bnlfe'a "Rose of Cnstile," selections from "Cavaliera RuMicami," and '"Mnritflna," a violin solo ou the new and novel Stroh violin, and a popular list of songs, duets, choral and instrumental pieces. The attractive character of the entertainment will no doubt bring its own reward. Mr. Maughan Burnett announces three pianoforte recitals, the first of which will bo given on Thursday week, 16th June. The St. John's Church Hall, Upper Dixon street, which hue been secured lor these recitals, is centrally, situated, being less than, two minutes' Widk from the tram stopping place at the corner of Manners and Willis streets. "Japan and the Japanese" was the subject of a very interesting lecture delivered at last night's mooting of the Webb-street Mutual Improvement Society by Mr. A. Thompson. The lecturer dealt with the, history of tha Japanese nation fiom its origin to the present day, and tho circumstances leading up to tho present war were thoroughly explained. Mr. G. Petheriek was chairman, and the lecture was much enjoyed.
