SERMON BY BISHOP NELIGAN .
[JIT TELEGRAPH — PUESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 29th January. In tho coui-he of a eornion beforo the General Synod,. Bifhop Neligan, of Auckland, said tho blight on the .New Zealand Church was parochial goj-sip and faultfinding. The Bishop i-rmuikcd that success was often counted of more value than service, and the doctrine of getting and hoarding was outing into Imperial and national life. Whether the now fiscal policy was right or wrong, none but oxpeils could judge, but every thinking man had a right to express his opinion on it. There was jusb this iibout the controversy : There was the danger of an appeal to tJio lowest and not to the highest in human nature. Supposing that this should prove to be tho case, probably the miiiip force which wolded the Empire would disintegrate it. Lob them think of the standard s>el> before the young in school and home life, which was more commonly impressed on children — tho value of success or tho vnluo of service? Tho nntionul life which was measured by the question: "Will it pay?" would sooner or later be a curse to all. The preacher hoped thut tho New Zcnlnud Church ■would remain true lo the greut mother Church of England, which stood cilm among representations of mistaken but earnest men. Thoutrh reviled like her founder, she reviled not again.
