NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

! RESULTS OF THE FIRST EXAMINATIONS. The following ropoit has been r-sceivecl by tho Minister for Education ficin the Secretary to iho Department upon thu examinations held throughout tho colony early in tho month lor the National Scholarships created by tho Act of last session : — The fhst examination for Junior National Schohiitihips wus hold by arrangement with tho Boards of Education on the sth and 6th of January, 1904. Candidates for freu places iv secondary schools under clause 6 (6B) of tho regulations under Iho Secondary Schools Act, 1903, wore examined on the same paper. The number of candidates for Junior National Scholarships and free places was 435, and thero were also 126 candidates for free places only. Tho total number of candidates who qualified is 276. The maximum aggregate of murks obtainable was 850. Candidates obtaining not less than 40 per cent, of .tho maximum aggregate, and not less than 25 per cent, of Uie possible marks in English nnd arithmetic are considered us qualified by examination for national scholarships and free plncos. Below aro lists of those no quulined iv tho several education districts, the names in each list being ai ranged in order of merit. It will be for each Board of Education, after making due enquiries into tho other qualifications of candidates, to award the scholarships to tho highest qualified candidutes in accordance with tho Act. Tho highest marks actually obtainod in the several papers are. us follows: — English 85 pur cent., arithmetic 91 per cent., geography 80 per cent., drawing 98 per cent., general paper 86 per cent., and tho highest aggregate of marks obtained by any ono candidate is 699, obtained by Helen Inglis P. Whyte, of Huvelock North School, Hawko.s Bay district. Follorang is a list of qualified candidates in order of merit. Candidates for free places only are marked with an asterisk.
