FIRES.
[O'U. TELBGBArn — rnisss association.] IIOKITIKA, This Day. A four-roomed cottago in Hampdenetreet was burned to the ground la«t night. It was ownpd by Mr. J. Jolly, and occupied by Mr. Luthvcn. The insurance on tho furniture wus £50 in the Northern office. Ilia cottage waa uuinsured. STRATFORD, This Day. A fire occurred at Midhirst this morning at 4 o'clock. Five buildings wero totally destroyed — viz., Foster (confectioner), Collins's (commission agent), Bank of New Zealand office, Bennett's (unoccupied), Mynotb (saddler), Mrs. Turner's tea rooms. White's (bootmaker), and Ludcr's (storelccopev). REEFTON, This Day. Lockingtou's sawmill, about three miles from Recfton, caught fire yesterday afternoon. Noavs was telephoned to the Reefton Brigade, and several townspeople wont oufr, arriving just in timo to save tho mill and a private residence. Considerable damage was done to the sheds, which contained a- large quantity of valuable fimber, also to tho stables. A large stack of timber, which was piled outside, and tho workmen's huts", were completely destroyed. The insurance i» small, but tho exact amount is not available. It is not sufficient to cover the. loss. The fire originated from a bush five in the viciuity. In addition to the alarm given last night, tho Fire Brigade was called to Newtowu Park again this morning, to put out nnothor scrub ill e.
