» A SEAMAN CAUGHT RED-HANDED. Hearing a crash of glass in Willisstreet about a quarter past one o'clock this morning, Constable Woodloy proceeded to tho locality from whence the noiso came, and found that tho tlote-gltfAs window of Darcy Ford and Co. , general importers, had been broken, and that ceveral watches which he had previously noticed in tho window, were missing. He immediately concealed himself on the opposite side of tho street, and alter waiting lor about half an hour, saw a man walk along and stop in front of the broken window. The constable noticed that the man had something up his sleeve, and, crossing over the street, accosted him, and subsequently abstracted an iron belaying pin, about 20in long, from \m clothing, Whon asked to explain why lio carried such an instrument, the man «iid he had heard that Wellington, was a rough place, and thought it neccissary to carry a weapon in case ho was called on to defend himself. The constable, not being satisfied with tho answer, searched him, and found two rolled gold watches and two pipes in cases in his pockets. Ho then accused the man of smadiing Dorcy Ford and Co. 'a window, and taking tho wafcclies and plpM from the premises. He admitted having done so, and the constable irrested nim and took him to the Lumblon-qwy Po/ico Station. It transpired that the mt»n was GeorgeGrossman, n- wnmnn belonging to tho barque J." T. North, afc present in tbo stream. He was subsequently brought before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, and cliarged with breaking and entering tho premises of Darcy Ford and Co., and stealing tlio articles mentioned. After evidence in support of the charge had been given, acousfd pleaded Guilty, and was committed to tbo. Supremo Court for sentence
