HARBOUR BOARD.

The Harbour Board held the first of its morning sittings to-day, meeting at 11.45. 2»ir. N. Reid presided, and there were also present — Messrs. F. H. Fraser, M.L.C., W. Cable, D. J. Nathan, T. Wood, M.H.R., 0. E. Daniel, and the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. G. W. Aitken). The stale of the bank account was shown as follows : — Credit balance to cuirenb account, £17,372 11s sd; to imprest wages account,' £550 j on fixed deposit, £14,000. Payments amounting to £17,588 0s 5d for accounts and wages, £2347 12s. 8d for progress on contracts, and £577 2s for salaries were authorised. The Chairman reported : --That after consultation with representatives of the employees the tenders of the Te Aro House Drapery Company, Limited, and of Messrs. Chas. . Hill and Sons for the supply of uniforms and of uniform caps respectively were accepted ; that a telegram had been received from Messrs. Lobnitz and Company, Ltd., stating that the dredge Whakarire had sailed on the 9th inst. ; that the appeal in the case of Tullock v. the Wellington Harbour Board (County of Ayr) had been withdrawn on payment by the Board of £100, each side paying their own costs ; that the Wellington Harbour Board* Empowering Act 1902 Amendment Bill had passed the Local Bills Committee of the House of Representatives without amendment ; that the wharf labourers' dispute had been removed by the employers from the Conciliation Board to the Arbitration Court; thab the Chairman had nominated as special constables Messrs. J. P. M'Manaway, G. A. Edwards, E. E. Furness, R. C. Smith, G. Johnson, and J. Walker, and they had been duly sworn in ; and that the Govemor-in-Council has approved of plans for the wharf near Clyde-quay. The report was adopted, The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended the Board — (1) To affix the seal to foreshore licenses for boat skids at Balena Bay to Messrs. W. H. Hales and Jas. Wishart ; (2) to affix the seal to a license to the Electric Light Syndicate to lay down a suction pipe at Jer-vois-quay and to draw water from the harbour for condensing purposes ; (3) to reply to the Lyttelton Harbour Board that any feasible scheme for the superannuation ; of employees would have the hearty support of the Board ; (4) to call for tenders in New Zealand and in Sydney for contract for extensions to and reconstruction of the Railway Wharf ; ¦(5) to call for tenders for hydraulic pipes and valves contract No. 126 for the Railway Wharf extension.; (6) to leave ip the hands of the Chairman the taking of any steps necessary in connection with a petition to the House of Representatives by Mrs. Alice Merry. The recommendations were agreed to. In reply to Mr. Nathan the Chairman stated that it was impossible at present I to fix a, site for a kerosene store. The Board went into Committee, and mi resuming it was resolved that the $ cretary be authorised to open negotiations with the Wellington Steam Ferry i Company for the cancellation of the '.'ease of the Haughtrey Bay Wharf ; that the seal of the Board be affixed to directions to the Sinking Fund Commissioners to invest £2000 in Masterton Borough debentures ; that the Board to continue accident pay as it has done hitherto ; that the Board oppose the proposed Petone Foreshore Vesting Bill, and authority be given to fix seals to any documents Required in connection with the opposition.
