• THE NAVAL AGREEMENT BILL. PROGRESS IN THE FEDERAL HOUSE. [press association.! MELBOURNE, 22nd July. In the Federal House of Representatives, the amendment by Mr. Watson, deader of the Labour Party, to the Naval Agreement Bill, that the Bill be read a wecond time six months hence, was negatived by 40 votes to 22. The potential value of the goldfields and tho vast extent of unoccupied lands in Western Australia rendered that portion of the continent a most valuable place for foreign nations; but owing to the want of »n army of sufficient strength and proper equipment, the railway under present conditions would confer no advantage on Australia.
