CHARGES AGAINST A REGISTRAR.
[BY TELEGRAPH — PHHB3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 21st March. The_ enquiry into tho charges against Mr. King, Registrar of Electors, was continued to-day, before Mr. W. R. Hnaclden, S.M., and Mr. Hugh Pollen, CoramlHsionerH. A memorandum waa read from the Telegraph Department, stating that tho telegram announcing the issue of the writs was received late on the night of tho 11th November, and delivered to tho Registrar early on tho morning of the 12th. The Registrar, who had previously stated that ho received tho telegram on the 11th, raid this had beon hia positive belief until the present moment. Mr. Reed, acting for tho complainants, referred lo the question asked if witneftsea by tho Chairman of the. Commission as to whether tho taking of tho claim for enrolment to Mr. Masofiold (Opposition candidate) after tho isauo rf tho writ was not intended as a trap. Mr. Reed said tho newspaper reports (tho correctness of which was not disputed) had given some people tho impression that Mr. Ilasclden intended to condemn the action, although ho (Mr. Rood) did not gather that impression. Mr. Haseldcn said ho did not intend to either condemn or approve the action. Perhaps "test* would havo bcon a better word to u«o ihnn "trap." Tho Commission was adjourned until [Monday. AUCKLAND, This Day. The onquiry was resumed this morning. Edward Rons Campbell deposed to repented efforts to get his name on the city roll, his third application being put in by Mr. Donne's direction. His natno did pot appear on tho roll. Forms Signed by witnesH produced wero marked by tlie Registrar, "Not satisfied ; rojoct." Witness prosecuted King-; tho caie was dismissed, but was now under appeal. Mr. Reid, solicitor, said tho Magistrate held that a caso of wrongful Intent on tho part of the Registrar had to be proved. Dealing - ''h tho list of names alleged to bo \w _tully oxpungod from the Grey Lynn roll and the city rolls, tho Registrar (King) gave explanations as to novoral cases, with a view to justifying bin action, but admitted that a mistake occurred in the omission from tho Grey Lynn roll of tho name "Wilfrid Cooper, Secretary Prohibition Party, Oxfordstroet." Tho error probably occurred through thore being an Oxford-street in tho city.
