SUGGESTED SOYAL COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY.

TO THE EDITOB. Sir— Now that we have fresh in our minds and read in our daily papers the heartrending, accounts of the sufferings endured by our fellow-creatures who were wrecked on the Eningamile, throueh the medium of the Post I should like to ask the people of these islands, who travel chiefly by sea, whether they will demand a strict enquiry into the came -ii l S temble disaster, or whether they will be satisfied with the usual superficial investigation. I have often had brought to my notice the lack of ordinary precautions for the preservation of life in case of accidents on our coasting steamers, and feel that if our legislators will not enake off the influences of vested interests and make and enforce laws for the protection of the public it is time that we ourselves moved in the matter. If the Government will appoint a properlyconstituted Commission to make a thorough investigation into the cause of the Ehngamite wreck I will gladly give my services for the good of the public, and I promise you there will be no perfunctory enquiry if 1 am there.— l am etc E, G. JELLICOE. Wellington, 15th November, 1902.
