NOTES FROM DUNEDIN.

[BT TEIiEQBAPH — OWN COREESFONDENT.] DUNEDIN, This .Day. Mr. White, Opposition candidate for the Chalmers seat, publishes a . letter from Mr. John Bamsay, manager of the Round Hill Mining Company, who went to Port Chalmers by the special train advertised to' take down passengers in time to hear the Premier's address on Tuesday night. Complaint is made that the train, which was advertised to leave Dunedin at 7, did not take its departure for nearly an hour afterwards. Mr. Ramsay proceeds — "When we were about to start the Premier was quite beside himself -with passion, and let himself go, venting his ill-temper on the Railway Management, and applying to it terms * that can be better imagined than described in print. Now, the fact was that it was the Premier himself who alone was responsible for the detention of the train, and he who disarranged the running arrangements. If blame must be apportioned let it be saddled on the - right; horse, and in this instance it was the i Right Hon. R. J. Seddon. I feel exceedingly sorry, for the officials for the abuse they had to listen to from the Premier, when all the fault lay with himself." Very great interest was taken in the case of false registration of birth heard at the Police Court yesterday, owing to , the fact that the female defendant had ( levied blackmail on two prominent mer- | cantile men for maintenance of her al- i leged child, when she had never been a i mother. The fact of her importuning ■ for further blackmail led to enquiriesbeing instituted by the police, which culminated in the prosecution of Brown and his wife, who now stand committed for trial. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] DtfNEDIN, This Day. The Arbitration Court yesterday' gave awards in a number of cases. In the painters' dispute clauses wore inserted similar to those ruling in Wellington regarding overtime and payment for country jobs. The Court considered it unreasonable that an employer should be | prevented from teaching his son his own trade, even though he may have the full number of apprentibes. In the tailors' dispute the present agreement was con- ' tinued, with some variations, and the minimum wage was nxed at £2 15s per week. The award applies to Oamaruand Invercargill. In a- compensation case under the Workers* Compensation for Accident Act, David Reddie, who lost an eye while working for tlie Borougn of Balclutha, was awarded 10s per week until the Court otherwise ordered. j

A singular occurrence happened in the Waikaremoana district not long ago. According to a report received at Wairoa (Hawkes Bay) a large drove of wild pigs made their appearance on a station, and came up close to the house. They had evidently been driven in by the snow and bad weather prevailing. A hunt was soon held, and seventy ol tho animals were slaughtered. A man iAs since been kept employed in killing the ' rest. ' An Inland Communication League has been formed at Nelson. The object of the league is to watch the interests, of the district, particularly with regardt to inland communication.
