A fatal accident occurred on board the Wakatere. One of the crew, a young man named Ernest Prohl, aged 18, while working the steam winch raising the cargo, leaned forward to guide the winch. His foot slipped and he fell forward, h's knee striking the bar and .turning on the steam, which set the winch going rapidly. His left arm was drawn around the bairel of the winch and broken, and the base of his skull was fractured. He was unconscious when drawn out, and died on the way to the hospital. At the inquest a verdict of Accidentally Killed was returned. WAIPAWA, This Day. An extraordinary dense dust, apparently coming from the sea, enveloped a large area of the East Const this morning. When first seen it bore the appearance of light rain, but it gradually increased in density and spread until within a few miles of Waipawa. It cannot be accounted for by local causes.
